Focus on Numeracy with Purple Mash

April 29, 2022

This blog focuses on recognising the value and presence of numbers in everyday life.

Celebrate numeracy with Purple Mash

There are lots of activities on Purple Mash that schools can use to celebrate the power of numbers.

Children can use 2Count to create their own pictograms. This could include counting objects in the house or when out on a walk. How many rainbows in windows can children spot?

Times Tables

Children can learn their times tables with 2Simple Table Toons and test themselves on their number knowledge on Monster Multiplication.

Dive into the Multiplication Tables Check tool. This Purple Mash activity is the perfect way to engage students in learning the multiplication table facts.

Putting number skills to the test

There are a range of games that children can use to practice and test their number skills and have fun doing it.

From mermaids to rockets, 2Race is a virtual collaborative racing maths game that has a variety of exciting themes. It is designed to make learning numbers enjoyable, while at the same time helping to firmly secure knowledge and improve mental arithmetic. All areas of number are covered, with students’ responses to questions automatically recorded to allow for comprehensive diagnostic data. Teachers and students can play collaborative live racing challenges or alternatively, students can play pre-made games against virtual players.

Recently updated Bond Bubbles is a gripping way to reinforce those pesky number bonds. The aim of the game is to use the bubble blower to fire a bubble at a number that will make the number bond being asked. You will find three mysterious new lands waiting to be discovered. Each land has a series of levels, which all need to be completed before you can progress to the next land.

A path through each land is charted on a map for explorers to follow, and they must complete each level to continue along the path in order to complete their journey along each path. And best of all, the game adapts to the player’s ability, making this the perfect game to support all students.

Sequence Snake lets students apply knowledge of number facts and sharpen their mental arithmetic in a challenging yet fun game. Students must strategically feed Sequence Snake by guiding him to the next correct number. With every correct number eaten, Sequence Snake grows by that amount so helping him to not eat himself becomes pretty challenging after a few 9s!

Or why not get children to use this template to create their own Dice game, they could also use 2Quiz to create their own quizzes for others to solve all based around the theme of number.

There are lots of ways to explore, teach and reinforce number in Purple Mash. However you do it, we’d love you to share your numerical adventures with us on our Twitter or Facebook pages.
