Making Learning Authentic

This post celebrates how one teacher is exploring all the gems in Purple Mash to create authentic learning.

Pokemon cards are very popular in the Year three class.  So I decided what a great motivator to bring the cards into the learning.  In Mathematics we are learning about Data Handling.  The students are using the Pokemon cards to create a database using Purple mash, 2Investigate.  After they have built their database they can use the information to create different graphs, sort the data and write a report on their findings.  They are all so highly motivated as you can see from the photos.

The children have also shown me how to play the game during a Math lesson as there is an incredible amount of math involved especially adding and subtracting of tens and hundreds.

Purple Mash Computer Science Integration

Year three students have been using the Purple Mash program across the curriculum, here is a showcase of some of the work produced.  This has been implemented throughout the year.  The main is focus remains paper and pencil.

Once you have accessed the link you can interact with the program.

The first piece of work is from 2DIY3D, with this program the children had to design their own game.

Another program the children have used is from 2Question which is a branching database that one of the students created. 

We have used 2Connect to plan and write stories.  The great thing about this program is it allows the children to have their plan beside them and insert parts of the plan into the writing.  

The children have been creating music compositions with Miss Sancto.  They used the program 2Sequence.  

Next is an example of a reading response from Serial Mash.  

Lately, the children have created a database using 2Investigate.  They have thoroughly enjoyed using this program.  The next step is using the database to create a quiz using 2Quiz.
