Computer Science Education Week

Nov. 28, 2019

Computer Science education week is held annually in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hooper; this year the week runs from December 9-15. The annual program is dedicated to inspiring students to take an interest in computer science and develop and nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities, you can find out more about the hour of code and the activities for this year here.

Purple Mash has a whole range of applications and activities that you can make use of either for an hour of code, the whole week and even throughout the year. We have highlighted our top three.

The new Ofsted framework

Oct. 29, 2019

Ofsted have recently released their new Education Inspection Framework (EIF) with several changes that replace the current Common Inspection Framework (CIF). Concerns were raised that the curriculum became second place to performance measures and preparation for tests, meaning many, especially in disadvantaged and SEND schools, were not getting access to a rich, broad and deep curriculum. The new framework includes 4 key judgements; the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development and leadership and management. One thing we know several teachers are worried about is the Ofsted Deep Dive.

Case study: Sunnyfields Primary

April 9, 2019

We were recently lucky enough to be invited to Sunnyfields, a lovely one form entry primary school in North London to see how the 2Simple Centre for Excellence school use Purple Mash across the curriculum. With their high usage across subject areas and outstanding teaching of computing, we knew this would be a great place to visit.
