Transition to Secondary School

June 4, 2020

The move from Primary School to Secondary school is an exciting time for many, but also one that can be daunting and full of questions. The transition this year for Year 6 is a totally different one. With many Year 6 students returning to schools this week and in the weeks to come, but returning to a different school that they are used to with ‘bubbles’ and social distancing, preparing them for their time at Secondary School and remembering their time spent at Primary is a challenge.

We have put together a series of activities to help pupils get prepared for the move to Secondary School.  Each activity in our new topic pack Transition to Secondary gives pupils the space to gather their thoughts and write them down. We recommend that they save each activity and come back to it regularly, taking time to reflect on what they have written and where possible share with friends and family.

Some of the activities within the transition pack include:

  • My Profile: Write about aspects that are part of your identity to create a profile of your qualities including what you are good at, what you enjoy and what you have achieved.
  • My New School: Find out about your new school and create a booklet of information to help you and others. Use your new school's website and any information that you have received from them.
  • Timetable Navigator: Use the examples in this activity to help you navigate a secondary school style timetable and develop organisation skills.
  • Memory Book: Use this example memory book to give you some ideas of making your own.
  • New Teachers: Read about Jade's experience and then complete the 'Getting Prepared' frame

There is also a guidance document for teachers that detail all the activities available. We ran a webinar this week looking at how the transition to Secondary School can be more supported with Purple Mash. You can catch up with the webinar in the recording below.

We hope that these activities help your pupils getting ready for Secondary School, we would love to see any of the work that you complete, you can share on Twitter @2SimpleSoftware or @PurpleMash, or on Facebook @2SimpleUK.
