The Dot Com Digital approach

Dot Com Digital provides a unique safeguarding programme that supports children’s personal development and offers a safe environment for them to learn the skills to lead a safe and happy life.

The aims of the programme and how it supports children and schools

Created by Sharon Doughty, a former news presenter and crime reporter. The programme aims to:

  • Teach children communication skills and to help them learn to talk about their feelings.
  • Identify children who may have worries and to help them to create their 'helping hand' of trusted adults who can support them.
  • Encourage children to achieve their dreams and aspirations.
  • Provide a mechanism for schools to work with outside visitors such as motivational speakers.

The move to digital

Dot Com Digital is an enhanced digital version of the Dot Com safeguarding programme which has been developed by children with Essex Police, the National Police Chief Council, Internet Intelligence and Investigations and safeguarding leads.

Some of our favourite things about Dot Com Digital:

Dot Com or 'Dot' is a cartoon friend to children that talks to them in their own language and helps them learn how to speak up about issues which frighten or worry them.

Created with Essex Police and the National Police Chief Council Lead for Internet Intelligence and Investigations.

Children can ask for a 'Dot Minute' if they're feeling worried or afraid by something. Teachers can also request a 'Dot Minute' from a child. This keeps both pupil and teacher safe.

What's covered in Dot Com Digital

The free version will include five themes, including: Feeling Safe, Recognising Personal Warning Signs, Grooming, Knife Crime and County Lines. There’s no limit for schools to use this resource, and it’ll be updated to reflect current issues reported by children and the police.

Schools will be able to choose to upgrade to a paid digital license once available. It will house over 24 themes which will enable a school to fulfil a rich PSHE curriculum across all years including flexibility of teaching and will have additional enhanced features.
