British Science Week - 11th-20th March 2022

Feb. 9, 2022

British Science Week, run by the British Science Association, is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths, featuring entertaining and engaging events and activities across the UK for people of all ages and will take place between 11th-20th March 2022. We know this is not traditionally "celebrated" in SA... but we just had to share all these cool Purple Mash activities with you!

The week provides a platform to stimulate and support teachers, STEM professionals, science communicators and the general public to produce and participate in STEM events and activities.

Purple Mash resources

Purple Mash has a wealth of resources to support you in school to celebrate British Science Week, from Mashcams to writing frames, we have a range of resources that you can use during the week. Here we have collated a few of our favourites. If you're not currently a subscriber, you can try Purple Mash free for 14 days.

Plants and flowers

You could start by asking children what growth means to them and use 2Connect to gather and share their thoughts and use this debate template to ask if all growth is good. If we look at plants first, children can use 2animate to create an animation of plants growing or to show a life cycle. They can use our Growing Plants template to describe what happens as a plant grows and take our Plants Labelling quiz labelling the parts of the plant and things that help it to grow. They can also label the parts of a flower and complete the story of a seed.

Human growth and exercise

There are also a range of activities relating to Human growth and exercise that children can use during the week. They look at what happens as they grow older and complete our Growing and Changing template.  Can they match the animal to its young and describe the changes as they grow up? Doing physical exercise is important for children’s’ growth and development, so why not ask children to investigate what happens when they exercise and design a poster encouraging other children and adults to do more exercise. There are also a range of printables that you can use on the theme of growth during the week.

Whatever you choose to do for British Science week we would love to see you work on our Twitter or Facebook pages using the hashtag #BSW22. Have fun!
