Chinese New Year, also referred to as the Lunar New Year, is the Chinese Festival celebrating the new year on the traditional Chinese calendar which often occurs around late January and early February.
This year we enter the year of the Tiger and the festival will commence on Tuesday 1st February, running until 11th February. Although it’s a major holiday in Greater China, it is also celebrated in several countries across the globe.
Here at 2Simple, we celebrate Chinese New Year using Purple Mash, with a huge variety of resources and activities to use in your classroom to ensure your pupils learn about the importance of this festival for many cultures across the world.
With Purple Mash, we have several resources for you to use to celebrate Chinese New Year with your pupils. Start your research by using our Chinese New Year Research activity to find out all about the festival and then you can write a newspaper front page all about what happens.
You might also want to demonstrate your Chinese character skills by using our Chinese Writing activity and learn how to write the numbers 1-10. Alternatively, you could show how artistic and knowledgeable your pupils are by designing a poster to place around your classroom about the festival.
Over Chinese New Year, you will see many fireworks displays and you can use 2Paint in your classroom to design your own firework display or use our Chinese fan activity to design your very own traditional Chinese fan. You could also decorate your very own Chinese Lion, Ruqun (traditional dress), or lantern. Get as creative as you can to show how you will celebrate Chinese New Year.
For the little ones, we have some resources you can use in the classroom through Mini Mash. Use our labels alongside these pictures to test your pupil's knowledge of what each picture is. For a Funky Fingers activity, why not use our Time Savers templates and cut around the pictures to make finger and stick puppets, or even use these to be labels and badges!
There’s also a wide selection of themed jigsaws and pairs games to complete and it’s all supported by slideshows and printable resources.
