British Science Week - 7th-16th March 2025

March 5, 2025

What is British Science Week?

British Science week is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), coordinated by the British Science association. This year, it runs from 7th to 16th March with the theme 'Change and adapt'.

To support teachers and pupils in engaging with the theme, we've compiled a range of interactive resources and activities, alongside exciting new ClickView videos - all available within Purple Mash!

British Science Week Activity Packs

The British Science Association have produced a range of activity packs which have been created in partnership with UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). These contain lots of activities around all sorts of changes and adaptations, and can be used at home or in the classroom, allowing children to participate in the fun at any time.

They are also running their poster competition again this year, with a range of fantastic prizes, the poster should be on the theme of 'Change and Adapt' and entries can be submitted up to 3rd April 2025.

Purple Mash Resources to Support 'Change and Adapt'

On Purple Mash, there are plenty of resources to support the teaching of science for all different science topics. Read on to find resources for teaching the different aspects of this year's theme 'Change and Adapt'. If you're not currently a subscriber, you can try Purple Mash free for 14 days.

Change Science

The Change Science folder on Purple Mash is an excellent place to start for this year's British Science Week theme. Inside you'll find resources for plant and animal life cycles.

Children may want to read DK Learning's The Lifespan of a Plant and complete the reading comprehension and quiz before depicting their own plant life cycle.

There are also brilliant videos from Clickview: What is a Life Cycle? and Butterflies: Caterpillars in Disguise which can be used at the start of a lesson.

You can also access printable butterfly life cycle work sheets to complete if you don't have access to devices.

Materials

Explore the ways materials can change in this folder, with more fantastic ClickView videos, Materials and Their Physical Changes, and States of Water, Ready, Set, Flow! Write about reversible and irreversible changes, and solids, liquids and gases with the ready-made templates.

Use the Fair Test booklet to plan and carry out a fair experiment. You might want to:

  • Test the rate ice cube melts in different locations
  • Test the time it takes for different soluble powders to dissolve in water (e.g. ugar and salt)
  • Test how long different chocolates take to melt at the same temperature

Evolution and Adaptation

There are lots of teaching resources for different aspects of adaptation in the Evolution and Inheritance folder on Purple Mash. You can choose to look at the adaptation of plants, or of different animals to different environments. All of these resources have an information box which shows on the screen when it is opened, giving children useful information to get them started. The DK Learning text All About Animal Habitats also includes information about adapting to different enviroments, and is included as part of a Purple Mash subscription.

ClickView Science Videos: now on Purple Mash!

As you may have spotted above, Purple Mash now has a partnership with ClickView - the leading video solution for schools! This exciting collaboration brings high-quality, curriculum-aligned videos directly into Purple Mash, making it easier than ever for teachers to enhance lessons with safe and engaging video content.
